Haya-Prats Translation Underway

(Atlanta, GA 2006) In July TFFPS obtained the rights to translate and publish Dr. Gonzalo Haya-Prats’ doctoral dissertation “El Espiritu Santo en los Hechos de los Apostoles” (“The Holy Spirit in the Acts of the Apostles”). The dissertation, completed at the Pontifical Gregorian University of Rome in 1967 and translated into French in 1975 (L’Esprit force de l’église), was originally written in Spanish but was never translated into English.

L’Esprit has been widely referenced in doctoral dissertations and academic works that are considered by many to be the most significant contributions to pneumatological literature related to Pentecostal theology in the 20th century. R. P. Menzies’s Empowered for Witness: The Spirit in Luke-Acts (Sheffield Academic Press, 1991), a revised iteration of his doctoral dissertation (University of Aberdeen), references Haya-Prats’ work on nineteen pages, more than any other work with the exceptions of J. Dunn, I. Marshall, E. Schweizer, and M. Turner (a total of 248 scholars are referenced in the index).

Max Turner, in Power from on High: The Spirit in Israel’s Restoration and Witness in Luke-Acts (Sheffield Academic Press, 1996), discusses Haya-Prats’ work on forty pages; only the work of Menzies, Dunn, and Marshall receive greater attention (approximately 522 scholars are referenced in the index).

Matthias Wenk’s Community-Forming Power: The Socio-Ethical Role of the Holy Spirit in Luke-Acts (Sheffield Academic Press, 2000) also references Haya-Prats’ work extensively.

Translator chosen

TFFPS has also contracted with Scott A. Ellington, PhD (University of Sheffield), to translate the dissertation into English. Ellington is a missionary-educator of the Church of God (Cleveland, TN) who taught at Seminario Bíblico Mexicano from 1989 to 1994. The basic translation project is completed with only editorial polishing on-going. The editing phase should be completed by the end of summer 2008.
